Weber arr. Berlioz - Der Freischutz - T715002398

Sir John Eliot Gardiner and his team have recently been staging Berlioz's rarely performed take on Weber's Der Freischütz at the Opéra Comique in Paris. As originally composed, the work has spoken dialogue in German but, for the Paris production of 1841, Berlioz replaced the dialogue with recitative as well as adding the ballet expected by French audiences at the time. This is the most familiar part of his revision today, an orchestration of Weber's Invitation to the Dance. Tonight's rendition of the complete opera in Berlioz's reconfiguration is its first outing at the Proms. Finish time: approx. 22:25. There will be one interval.Performer Andrew Kennedy (tenor - Max). Performer Sophie Karthauser (soprano - Agathe). Performer Gidon Saks (bass - Kaspar). Performer Virginie Pochon (soprano - Annchen). Performer Matthew Brook (bass-bairtone - Kuno). Company Orchestre Revolutionnaire et Romantique. Performer John Eliot Gardiner (Sir).

Penguin Cafe - T1885662085

To end the season's Late Night series we celebrate a band of musicians popular for two generations. Penguin Cafe's quietly insidious blends of catchy material, sophisticated skill and slightly surreal unpredictability have long been familiar to listeners who may never have registered the names of performers or music. Originally dreamt up and fronted by Simon Jeffes until his death in 1997 - and also prompting David Bintley's successful ballet 'Still Life' at the Penguin Cafe - the group's music has reappeared on the scene thanks to Jeffes's son Arthur, who has added new pieces to the menu. Joining them is star Northumbrian smallpiper Kathryn Tickell, a past guest of the original Penguin Cafe Orchestra. Finish time: approx. 23:30Performer Kathryn Tickell (Northumbrian smallpipes).

Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra - T23188257

Period-performance pioneer Nikolaus Harnoncourt here makes his first ever Proms appearance in front of a modern symphony orchestra, conducting the incomparable Vienna Philharmonic in this season's last symphony by the 'father' of the form, 'Papa' Haydn (the bicentenary of whose death we mark this year). One of the first set of 12 'London' Symphonies, No.97 was composed and premiered on Haydn's first visit to England in 1791-2. Only ever given a rough run-through in Vienna during the composer's all-too-short lifetime, Schubert's 'Great' C major was eventually accorded its posthumous premiere by another of this year's bicentenarians, Felix Mendelssohn, in 1839. Approx finish time: 21:30. Broadcast Live on BBC Four and BBC Radio 3. There will be an interval.Company Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra. Conductor Nikolaus Harnoncourt.
