Last Night of the Proms - T1776613069

Tradition meets high jinks once again as Edward Gardner conducts his first Last Night of the Proms. For this grandest of grand finales there are two very special guests. Since her first Proms appearance in 1995, Susan Bullock has emerged as Britain's leading dramatic soprano, specialising in what she calls 'the large ladies' of the repertoire. None is more challenging than Brunnhilde, whose Immolation Scene concludes Wagner's epic Ring cycle. Also featured is a classical music superstar, as popular in the West as in his native China. Lang Lang plays Liszt at his most dazzling on this, his sixth visit to the Proms. Bartok's thrilling suite provides a blast of exotic orchestral colour. Arne, Parry and Elgar bring down the curtain in traditional fashion. But first the Master of the Queen's Music pays tribute to the Promenaders' fundraising efforts on behalf of the Musicians Benevolent Fund in his new work. Finish time: approx. 22:45.Conductor Edward Gardner. Performer Lang Lang (piano). Performer Susan Bullock (soprano). Company BBC Symphony Chorus. Company BBC Symphony Orchestra. BBC Philharmonic - T1887545696

To end our Schumann bicentenary survey, Irish pianist Finghin Collins plays the closest thing we have to a second Schumann piano concerto, while Robin Holloway offers a fresh slant on the composer's final song-cycle, which sets poems and prayers penned in exile and prison by Mary, Queen of Scots. Gianandrea Noseda and the BBC Philharmonic also include masterpieces by two other composers who sadly lived even shorter lives. Finish time: approx. 21:40Conductor Gianandrea Noseda. Performer Dorothea Roschmann (soprano). Performer Finghin Collins (piano). Company BBC Philharmonic.

Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra - T0516623572

In the second of its two Proms, the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra is conducted by its distinguished long-term associate and Honorary Member, Zubin Mehta, one of the rare recipients of the orchestra's coveted badge of honour, the Nikisch Ring. Together they reinvigorate Strauss's quintessentially quixotic set of 'fantastic variations on a theme of knightly character'. Brahms's final symphony also ends in a vast set of variations, his gloriously late-Romantic take on a Baroque-style passacaglia, using a theme borrowed from a Bach cantata. Approx finish time: 20:45. Broadcast Live on BBC Radio 3. There will be an interval.Performer Christian Frohn (viola). Performer Tamas Varga (cello). Company Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra. Conductor Zubin Mehta.
