Afrodisiac
Following their previous visits that saw two cult and boundary-breaking films - the 1923 art house classic Salome, and prior to that, Jean Cocteau’s Blood Of A Poet – coupled with a new and live score, Sound Affairs, led by acclaimed Cardiff composer Charlie Barber, are back with a brand new live music experience. Afrodisiac explores ritual and magic in African and South American cultures through an exhilarating mix of music and visual art. Devised by Barber, Afrodisiac brings together two highly respected musicians of traditional African instruments, Seckou Keita, an inspired and charismatic performer of the kora (the West African harp-lute) and Chartwell Dutiro, a maestro of the mbira, (the Zimbabwean ‘thumb piano’), and an ensemble of seven classical musicians. From African moon love spells and Haitian voodoo to Brazilian dances and Ghanaian tribal cult music, Afrodisiac celebrates a mysterious brew of love and the supernatural combined with the magical ‘Imaginative Realism’ paintings of Cuban artist Raul Speek. As anyone who has already experienced Sound Affairs’ exhilarating live shows will testify, this is an experience not to be missed, show casing live music in a new, exciting and inventive way.
