Schumann’s overture from his incidental music of Byron’s dramatic poem Manfred begins the evening followed by Tchaikovsky’s romantic Violin Concerto of 1888, declared unplayable at the time, with international soloist Alexander Sitkovetsky. Brahms’ towering Fourth Symphony closes two hours of some of the greatest music of the nineteenth century.
