The programme will open with two of Brahms' lively Hungarian Dances. This will be followed by Kuba Jakowicz, in a performance of Mendelssohn's much-loved violin concerto. You may remember Kuba Jakowicz' wonderful performance of the Dvorak Violin Concerto when he visited Bradford with the Orchestra in 2008. The centrepiece of this programme is Beethoven's timeless Fifth Symphony, best known for its dramatic 'V for Victory' opening. Completing this generous programme are the atmospheric 'Three Pieces in the Old Style' by the popular Polish composer Henryk Gorecki, composer of the popular Symphony of Sorrowful Songs, and two of Brahms's energetic Hungarian Dances.Conductor Antoni Wit. Performer Kuba Jakowicz (violin).

Composer Andre Panufnik was instrumental in the re-establishment of the orchestra after the war, and the orchestra will honour his work with a special performance of his elegantly-crafted Sinfonia Rustica. Bruch's well-known and well-liked Violin Concerto follows. Performed by leading Polish violinist Kuba Jakowicz, the concerto features clear melodies and the tricky technique double stopping (where more than one note is played on the violin at the same time). Reminiscent of Hungarian folk music, the concerto is a dramatic piece which culminates in a passionate frenzy, with the orchestra and violin getting louder and faster. Rounding off the programme is the cheerful, folk-inflected Symphony No. 2 or the Little Russian, coloured by Tchaikovsky's own Russian heritage.Conductor Antoni Wit.
