Desh - T1785036589Sadler's Wells is thrilled to present the return of Akram Khan's contemporary solo work, DESH, which was lavished with praise after its world premiere in 2011 and a blockbuster run here. DESH, meaning "homeland" in Bengali, is Khan's most personal work to date. It draws on multiple tales of land, nation, resistance and convergence into the body and voice of one man trying to find his balance in an unstable world. Moving between Britain and Bangladesh, Khan weaves threads of memory, experience and myth into a surreal world of surprising connection. At once intimate and epic, DESH explores fragility in the face of natural forces and celebrates the resilience of the human spirit.

Vertical Road - T01259169871Vertical Road sees Akram Khan returning to pure movement in his choreography, eliminating the text and dialogue which has featured in recent works such as In-I and zero degrees. Rooted in his classical kathak training, but informed by his experience and virtuosity in contemporary dance, the new work continues Khan's interest in exploring the interfaces between different cultures and creative disciplines. Lighting and costume will take on greater importance in this piece than in recent works and Khan is working with Danish lighting designer Jesper Konshaug and Japanese costume designer Kimie Nakano on these aspects of the production. Vertical Road is inspired by the idea of vertical ascension - a common motif in several different religions. Other key references to ascension take place in art and literature in terms of an ascetic ladder where one's virtuous deeds on earth elevate the soul from earthly preoccupations to bring us closer to a spiritual realm. The second is the journey that the soul takes after death, climbing the heavens up to the light of God. Vertical Road will explore these ideas in a ground-breaking work of contemporary dance, choreographed by Akram Khan and performed by eight hand-picked dancers from around the world.

Breakfast with Akram Khan - T0125189508This special studio-based breakfast event features excerpts from Akram Khan’s new work, Vertical Road. Vertical Road is Akram Khan’s latest contemporary ensemble work, and continues his ambition to explore the interface between different cultures and creative disciplines. Khan brings together a host of performers and artists from across Asia, Europe and the Middle East, diverse in age, craft and background. Potential collaborators include composer Nitin Sawhney and acclaimed puppeteers duo Blind Summit. Inspired by stories of angels as found in different cultures, faiths and mythologies, Vertical Road contemplates their universal role as intermediaries between the human and the sacred. It investigates the notion of the Arabic word ‘zenith’ or ‘vertical line’, the highest point reached by a celestial body. Through the innovative use of scenography, Vertical Road aims to create both a visually inspiring and spiritually profound experience.
