The Structure of Time/Sawal Jawab
The Structure of Time, performed by six dancers to music composed and arranged by Mick Taylor, takes the footwork section of the kathak repertoire to create wave after wave of different rhythms and beats in unison with a variety of Indian percussion instruments.
Sawal Jawab here refers to the rhythmic footwork in kathak dance that can be followed by a spontaneous rhythmic pattern from the percussionist. This piece incorporates levels of conversational dance and music based unusually on the qawali which has instant appeal due to its vibrant and pulsating rhythm reinforced by dynamic hand clapping and drumming- very similar to what has become known as the Bhangra beat.
