As part of the V&A’s autumn exhibition Post Modernism: Style and Subversion 1970-1990, Armitage Gone! Dance performs another Armitage classic. The Watteau Duets (1985), set to a score performed live by sonic duo TALIBAM!, portrays the battle of the sexes as a war dance with a sense of humour. Through sly references to the conventions of classical pas de deux, the audience is drawn into the intense world of a couple as they move through various stages of courtship, from secretive glances via erotic pleasure to complex normality. This is a one-off opportunity to see a rarely performed work, specially staged for the museum’s unique setting. The second half of the evening offers audiences the opportunity to share in a discussion between Karole Armitage and notable experts in the fields of Postmodernism and dance.
