The critically acclaimed Ballet Black strive to honour the traditions of classical ballet while breaking new ground with cutting-edge choreography. Now an essential part of the classical ballet landscape, the company is the perfect showcase for dancers of black and Asian descent, providing them with a platform on which to perform and practise their craft. Unsurprisingly, Ballet Black attracts dancers, choreographers and designers from around the world.

Triple Bill: Storyville/Cassa Pancho

Ballet Black, a company for international dancers of black and Asian descent, collaborates with three bold and inventive choreographers to present a trilogy of narrative and abstract dance. At the centrepiece, Christopher Hampson's Storyville is the bittersweet fable of Nola, a farm girl who falls prey to unscrupulous characters and worldly desires in 1920s' New Orleans, set to the haunting music of Kurt Weill. British-Trinidadian Artistic Director Cassa Pancho has attracted a loyal following for her classically trained troupe, reinvigorating ballet with an indomitable energy and inspired versatility as well as promoting original work. Her first programme to be performed here also includes two newly devised pieces, by Christopher Marney, fresh from McQueen, and a duet by Arthur Pita, who previously choreographed a hit version of A Midsummer Night's Dream for Ballet Black's eight-strong ensemble.
