Tavaziva Dance’s new production features three short works in different moods; the high energy, fast-paced Kenyan Athlete; Sinful Intimacies - a sensual duet exploring African unease with same-sex love, and the company’s major new work My Friend Robert. Kenyan Athlete takes its starting point from the expression "the sun is beautiful people". It is set to a fast-paced soundtrack, exploring the beauty and physicality of Kenyan people and their surroundings. Sinful Intimacies, a sensual new duet, will be danced at different performances by either two men or two women, exploring the unease of African society with same-sex love, which is usually perceived as a dark possession of dangerously subversive bewitchment. My Friend Robert is a provocative, highly emotive production, drawing upon Bawren’s personal experiences and memories of growing up in the newly-independent Zimbabwe. It examines how Robert Mugabe’s visionary dreams, empowerment, redistribution of resources and flag-waving on his rise to power in 1980 led instead to megalomania, economic meltdown, corruption and violence.
