In an effort to breathe new life into Rabindra dance, Kadam/Pulse with the Tagore Centre supported the initial development of three dance pieces following an open call out. Performed at the Between the Lines Seminar on 27th November 2014 to an enthusiastic reception, we present the dances in a theatre setting for the first time. The performance opens with an extraordinary curtain raiser: vocal sculptor and beatboxer Jason Singh and singer Ranjana Ghatak collaborate in vocal explorations of Indian melody and rhythm textures. Established kathak artist Urja Thakore teams up with composer Mrityunjoy in a piece based upon Tagore's poem Praan and its Gujarati translation by Jhaverchand Meghani. The excitement of the sound rhythms intertwining in the two languages, further enhanced by footwork creates a dynamic matched by Urja's fine abhinaya (expression). A sound score of cello, voice and percussion evokes the two aspects of life- destruction and creation, in an endless cycle. Arunima Kumar and Sohini Alam bring the ancient tale of Kacha and Devyani into a twenty-first century context, examining notions of duty, love, betrayal and revenge in The Curse. A kuchipudi dancer par excellence, Arunima is exploring ways to make her classical art speak to audiences of today. Working in partnership with Bengali singer Sohini Alam, the duo match each other as feisty female figures unafraid to confront the dark side of human nature. Katie Ryan, odissi dancer, and singer Ranjana Ghatak, together explore the transcendental aspect of Tagore's thought in My Soul Is Alight. The second half features Leeds-based Balbir Singh Dance Company's Decreasing Infinity. Balbir Singh's twin training in contemporary and kathak styles is pushed into new and emotionally exhilarating territory in this highly- charged duet dramatically accompanied by human beatbox and live tabla.
