Scenes de ballet - A stylish and inventive piece that draws upon the best loved traditions of classical dance. Ashton considered it to be one of this finest works and it could be described as a shorter version of a grand classical ballet with true ballerina role at its heart. Dante Sonata - A tense battle between fragile innocence and desperate evil, created during the first few months of World War II, Dante Sonata is said to capture the anguish experienced by people at the time. Powerful, sombre, impassioned and highly dramatic in its movement. Enigma Variations - The composer Elgar and his close friends and family are the subject matter of Ashton's Enigma Variations says much about the qualities of friendship and love that sustain a creative artist.
