Shaped by award winning choreographer Olga Pona’s vision, the Chelyabinsk Theater of Contemporary Dance presents a double bill that takes much of its inspiration from the surrounding Siberian industrial heartlands. Her expressive choreography stems from a need to represent gritty daily reality through movement, reflecting the culture and geography of a city which straddles the border between Asia and Europe. In Does The English Queen Know What Real Life Is About? nine dancers tackle our understanding of a well worn traditional Russian phrase often used by older generations, literally meaning, ‘you don’t know real life’. Staring Into Eternity combines folk dance rhythms and atmospheric sounds in a piece that examines the cultural collision between traditional masculinity and a rapidly changing society.
