Hans van Manen - Master of Dance - T1690122798Dutch National Ballet returns to London to present three of Hans van Manen’s best-loved pieces. With a body of work that includes more than 120 ballets, created over the course of a career spanning nearly six decades, Hans van Manen is universally recognised as one of the most important choreographers of his generation. All the pieces will be performed to live music from the Royal Ballet Sinfonia. Set to Beethoven, Adagio Hammerklavier is a beautifully lyrical work, while Concertante, with music from Frank Martin’s Petite Symphonie, is a captivating combination of humour and aggression. The solos and intense pas de deux characterise van Manen’s style perfectly; sophisticated simplicity, visual logic and wonderful musicality.

Mixed Programme - T01699338023Music by Beethoven, Wagner, Minkus, Satie, Van Roon Dutch National Ballet presents a mixed programme that includes the famous Pas de Deux from Ludwig Minkus's Ballet Don Quixote, as well as the shorter piece Before/After, choreographed for the company's 2002 season and set to music by the contemporary Dutch composer, Marc van Roon. The timeless lyricism of the slow movement of Beethoven's piano sonata in B flat Op. 106 provides the accompaniment for Adagio Hammerklavier. A ballet for three couples, Adagio Hammerklavier has lost none of its expressive power in the 25 years since it entered Dutch National Ballet's repertoire. The passionate music from Wagner's Tristan und Isolde inspired Duet and is unashamedly romantic in its portrayal of the lovers, whilst Portrait, choreographed for a single dancer draws on the famous piano music of Eric Satie. Dutch National Ballet occupies a prominent position both nationally and internationally. With a troupe of more than seventy dancers, it is by far the largest dance company in the Netherlands and ranks amongst the leading companies in the world. Dutch National Ballet's repertoire includes a range of classical, Romantic, neo-classical, modern and contemporary choreographies and comprises a mix of intimate programmes and extensive, large-scale productions.

Programme 2 - The Four Temperaments/Do Not Go Gentle/Live - T0297160137The Four Temperaments - with music by [Paul Hindemith], which examines the four main medieval personality characteristics: the melancholic, the sanguinic, the phlegmatic and the choleric. Do Not Go Gentle is [Krzysztof Pastor]'s rendering of [Stravinsky]'s In memoriam Dylan Thomas, at tribute to and interpretation of Thomas' poem, written after the death of his father. Live - a ballet for just two dancers and one cameraman. A huge success at the Edinburgh Festival in 1998, the piece originates in van Manen's fascination with the moving image. The movements of the dancers are immediately projected onto the screen behind them, exploring the limitations imposed by the spatial dimensions of the stage.
