Vaudeville dancer Ruth St.Denis’ solo Radha was inspired by ‘all she knew of India and her arts’. With her husband Ted Shawn she established the Denishawn Company in 1915, which became a forerunner in the cross-cultural field. Martha Graham and Doris Humphrey, amongst others, were company members. For Zone 3 2002, Liz Lea will recreate this historical work with a company of men. Working in collaboration with Jacobs Pillow, Lea plans to recreate all five of St Denis’s solos in the run up to their Centenary in 2006.Funded by Lisa Ullman Travel scholarship.
