Exposure: Dance presents short works by emerging choreographers including premieres of commissioned works by Alexander Whitley and aerialist Ilona Jantti. Alex, who has been nominated for the ?Critics' Circle Dance Award' as ?Outstanding Modern Male Performer' for his work with Wayne McGregor | Random Dance, draws on themes from Camus' L'Etranger with music by Finn McNicholas. Ilona Jantti presents a new aerial solo Handspun created in collaboration with the composer Luke Styles, an extract of whose work Fetus in America can be seen in Exposure: Opera. Jorge Crecis recreates his piece 36 with 12 dancers, described by one reviewer as "Sudoku brought to life but with no margin for error and with a pinball like focus" (Katie Fish, Londondance.com). Gary Clarke's Two Men & A Michael is a typically deadpan send up of stand-up comedy via the antics of Gilbert and George and Morecambe and Wise and performed for Exposure: Dance by Tom Roden and Pete Shenton of New Art Club fame. A different bite-sized dance work completes each performance, including Boy Blue Entertainment's Krump Buck-Amp, Shattered, a solo from Company Chameleon and the London premiere of Rachael Mossom's L'Uomo Uccelo. The award-winning duo Levantes Dance Theatre will welcome the audience to the Linbury Bar with pocket size Canap? Art performances, while the opportunity to meet the artists in the bar after the show completes this informal yet stimulating evening.

Programme II - T180862954

Programme II features Arranged Marriage which is choreographed by Devaraj Thimmaiah and is performed by Fukiko Takase and Devaraj Thimmaiah. The musical concept is by Alberto N.A. Turro. This piece looks into the meaning of arranged marriage, just as in life when you work with a partner using different languages, finding common ground or exploring difference itself. ‘Now there is no more loneliness. Now you are two people, there is only one life before you’. New work Taal is choreographed by Alesandra Seutin and explores percussive rhythm in African, contemporary and tap dance, with the two performers playing off each other’s movement ideas with a subtle competitive edge. Performed by Alesandra Seutin and Annette Walker, Taal aims to deliver a universal message as it explores the possibilities of rhythmic patterns in movement. If Nobody Speaks... is a new work created for Exposure: Dance and is a co-commission with DanceEast. Choreographed by Cameron McMillan and performed by Cameron McMillan and Lisa Weldham, this physically dynamic and emotionally charged duet highlights the complexity of personal communication. It explores the underlying tensions of what is often left unsaid and the implications of the struggle for power and our ultimate desire to be understood. Traffic is choreographed by Stephanie Schober and is commissioned by Laban and the Garrick Charitable Trust. With the musical composition by accordionist Camilla Barratt-Due and performed by Lisa Manavit, Keir Patrick and Camilla Barratt-Due, Traffic takes its inspiration from the piano piece Abundant Numbers by American composer Tom Johnson, who is renowned for his minimalist music based on mathematical themes. In this, the performers interpret the composition, exploring the logical structure as a framework to exchange and share their materials and to negotiate and navigate their pathways and rhythms.

Programme 1 - T0569260121

Choreographed and conceptualised by Mayuri Boonham and performed by Ashley James Orwin, Tiger-Bharatanatyam is a dance based on an extract from R.K.Narayan’s novel A Tiger for Malgudi, in which the tiger narrates the circumstances of his capture, training and life in captivity as a performing circus act. Boonham explores the premise of a traditional Bharatanatyam dance structure to evolve a balance between classical and contemporary expression. Initial choreographic research for the piece took place as part of Boonham’s choreographic exploration during ROH2’s DanceLines 2009 directed by Wayne McGregor at the Royal Opera House. The Wake is choreographed by ROH Associate Choreographer Sarah Dowling in collaboration with the Royal Ballet dancers Kristin McNally and Thomas Whitehead. With music by singer and bodhran drummer Brona McVittie and violinist Ruth Elder, The Wake is a duet which occurs in the twilight hours of the night when the living and dead entwine. The Wake was originally developed out of a Battersea Arts Centre Scratch commission in collaboration with Geir Hytten. Choreographed by Marc Brew, the London Premiere of Fusional Fragments, explores the concept of fusion of fragments between classical ballet and contemporary dance, questioning whether elements can be fused together or if they should remain fragmented. With an original score by acclaimed composer and percussionist Dame Evelyn Glennie and Philip Sheppard, the five dancers Avatara Avuso, James Cousins, Rebecca Evans, Davin King and Benjamin Ord investigate the difference and influences of the two styles. The creation of this work has been commissioned by the Unlimited programme which is part of the London 2012 Cultural Olympiad, with the partnership with DanceEast.
