Southern Bound Comfort/Bound
Gregory Maqoma and South African compatriot Shanell Winlock make a welcome return to the Lilian Baylis Studio performing a new double bill featuring the acclaimed
Southern Comfort and the world premiere of
Bound. Performed last year at Sadler’s Wells in the Svapnagata Festival of Indian Music and Dance, Maqoma’s
Southern Comfort is a sharp, and at times humorous, look at the human ability to connect emotionally and physically to the world around us.
Bound is a brand new work by Maqoma and Moroccan-Belgian choreographer Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui, performed by Maqoma and Winlock. Drawing on the three collaborators’ cultural backgrounds,
Bound explores the ways in which we are bound to each other, our heritage, and our desires. Both duets are accompanied live by three musicians drawing on European, South African and South Asian traditions.
