Jin Xing is a prize-winning dancer and owner of Beijing's hottest nightclub. But it is as China's first high profile trans-sexual (she was formerly a male colonel in the People's Liberation Army) that she has really achieved fame and, more remarkably, been able to speak openly about her sexuality. UK Premiere. The Closest - The Furthest begins with an incense ceremony and cleansing ritual. The musician places her traditional Chinese instrument, a seven string GuQin, on the table in the centre of the stage and begins to play. Jin Xing tells the story of the GuQin’s thousand years of history. The GuQin’s music was used by ancient Chinese emperors as a link between mortal human beings, heavenly forces and earth-grounded strength. Just as these ancient emperors used the instrument’s voice, Jin Xing uses her body language to dance the implicit connection between earth and sky.
