Why?

Lindsey Butcher (Jerwood Circus Award Winner 2003) presents Why? followed by Launch - young companies with new pieces. Why? is an aerial dance duet in two parts on single line harnesses made in collaboration with award winning choreographer Fin Walker and composer Ben Park. Why? asks questions about the inevitable. It is driven and fierce in its articulation. Power and strength juxtaposed with ease and surrender. The finished piece will not be an abstract piece of aerial dance, nor will it be narrative. It will have an emotional voice expressed through its physicality. Par 1 only (approx. 10 mins) will be shown at The Circus Space. The finished piece will be premiered at the Royal Opera House Floral Hall on May 23rd. Why? will form the largest in a series of short pieces for newly formed aerial dance company Gravity and Levity. Fundamental to all of the pieces is a genuine fascination with and exploration of the range of movement, dynamic and suspension gained whilst working at improbable angles or when the dancers' familiar relationship to the floor, weight and gravity is substantially altered - staking out new territory. Gravity and Levity will premiere the completed series in May 2005 followed by a national tour. Launch - Young Companies with New Pieces. Bibi and Bichu (10 mins) The energetic club passing and high velocity acrobats are back with an extract from their forthcoming new show, which includes new faces as well as acts for all to enjoy. Max Haverkamp and Susan Voyticky present Crossed Stars (8 mins) Crossed Stars combines the amazing juggling abilities of Max with the sensual movement of Susan in the air, resulting in a piece that is both technically challenging and emotionally powerful. The simplicity of the metaphor - a relationship between man and woman expressed through juggling, dance, acrobalance and aerial work - creates a story as fantastic as it is touching. LapisLazuli present Apartment (runs 30 mins) Sophie Avigdor and Annette Fiaschi present a twisted, light hearted story of a friendship combining contortion, poetry, hand balancing and humour. Kicking the Moon present Second Thoughts (runs 30 mins) Fresh from the Christchurch Arts Festival in New Zealand, Kicking the Moon is back with their new show. Max Haverkamp and Ashley Carr combine their quirky comedy with skilful juggling, impressive acrobatics and inevitable marriage. Springboard
