An opportunity to see new works from across the postgraduate department ranging from group choreographies to selected previews from the School's acclaimed postgraduate performance company, EDge. This year EDge is a strong and diverse ensemble of three men and nine women, all trained at the world's most notable dance conservatoires from across the UK, Europe and America. The 2012 programme features new full length pieces by leading international artists, including Matthias Sperling, James Wilton plus works by Rachel Lopez de la Nieta and Tony Adigun, both specially co-commissioned by The Place and Dance Umbrella for Alston Takes Cover, which was performed in Dance Umbrella 2011.

London Contemporary Dance School presents three works by postgraduate students at the start of their professional careers. Jia-Yu Corti, Lindy Nsingo and Joe Moran are three exceptionally talented choreographers, whose original and thought provoking work is set to stun audiences at The Place on 22 and 23 June. Unsignal - Choreographed by: Joe Moran With text contributed by individuals from around the world, Moran infuses his work with words that engage in the physicality of ideas and create a work imbued with a density of conflated, jostling and approximate meanings. Mirror Maker - Choreographed by: Lindy Nsingo Reflection - seeing, feeling and believing? An investigative play with movement where ideas emerge from a concept of looking in a mirror and questioning our notions of honesty. Imaginative, dynamic, with strange combinations and deceptively fluid movement, bound together to create a work that sparks the imagination. Silver - Concept, Direction and Choreography: Jia-Yu Corti With movement produced through task-based improvisation, Jia-Yu Corti has created structures and ideas that have slowly, but spontaneously emerged from the process to create a fragile creature that might fade away if we shine too strong a light on it.

Repertoire for the tour is comprised of work choreographed by the students themselves, performed alongside pieces by master dancemakers Richard Alston, Merce Cunningham and Siobhan Davies. Created in 1988 and reconstructed for LC3 by former Richard Alston Dance Company member Kate Price, Alston’s Hymnos has music by Peter Maxwell Davies. Cunningham’s Fielding Sixes consists of 64 phrases, repeated in sixes at a rapid tempo, each phrase being varied in movement and accent and has been reconstructed for LC3 by ex-Merce Cunningham Company dancer Jeannie Steele. Featured in the first programme of performances the newly formed Siobhan Davies Dance Company gave in 1988, White Man Sleeps has been featured on the A-level syllabus and has been reconstructed for LCDS by former Siobhan Davies dancer Sasha Roubicek.

Highlights of the 2008 Graduation Performances are new works from distinguished alumni Kim Brandstrup and Martin Lawrance, alongside a new piece by Marc Brew and a re-working of Hofesh Shechter’s breakthrough Cult, originally commissioned by The Place for the 2004 Place Prize. Additionally, the nightly-changing programmes will feature a selection of the best of the students’ own choreography. Among this year’s 20 one-year certificate and 30 three-year BA graduates are Natalie Trewinnard, Alisdair Stewart, Jamie Higgins and Katherine Szkolar. These four students are the first participants of the Music and Dance Scheme’s Centre for Advanced Training programme to graduate from vocational training. Piloted at The Place in 2004, the CAT programme enables students aged 10-17 showing exceptional talent to undertake intensive part-time prevocational training. The Graduation Performances are the culmination of London Contemporary Dance School’s degree courses - either a one-year Certificate or a three-year BA Honours - at one of the world’s leading dance conservatoires. The School is based at The Place, the UK’s premier centre for contemporary dance.

Paired with Wimbledon School of Art and Design and postgraduates at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama to produce multimedia performance projects for Collaborations. The students participate in intensive workshops designed to challenge them to solve creative problems, exchange ideas and form collaborative partnerships, with their resulting pieces showcased over four performances. The pieces that emerge are a bold and imaginative mix of ideas: the design work ranges from large scale constructions to innovative uses of the theatre itself, and the music pieces combine live musicians and electronic scores.
