A seminal work by French choreographer Martine Pisani, sans has achieved cult status as an endearing introduction to contemporary performance. The piece is based on the dancers' presence and their engaging, humorous progression from one situation to the next. The simplicity of the action relies on a series of unexpected changes and transitions, unpretentious pedestrian movements and playfulness, which build up on an empty stage in complete silence. Behind the simplicity lies an essential question about what performance is - how much is true and how much is fake on stage; how much is natural and how much is acting?
