Moving Africa 2. Part 1 - La Compagnie Mali - Ti Chelbe. Part 2 Compagnie Ta - Buudu
Ti Chèlbè - In this extremely personal work choreographer Kettly Noël portrays a woman struggling with slipping realities. Ravaged by a sense of claustrophobia she is pushed closer to an isolated madness. Articulating these inner conflicts her movements are struck out at a relentless pace. Throughout this flight of emotions, a man draws near, his parallel existence reflecting her every mood. A statement of rare beauty, Ti Chèlbè draws upon the cross-fertilisation of influences from present-day Mali.
Bûddu, or ’community’ is the essence of this raw work. Swift urban development has left many small African communities striving to keep a grasp on their traditions while the excitement and danger of the city loom nearer. The three founding artists of Compagnie Tâ communicate their response to this global issue, with their roots firmly planted in tradition, but resolutely tapping into contemporary life they dance with verve, humour and blade-sharp physicality.
