My Exile is in my Head & Inception
T0
My Exile is in my Head - My Exile is in my Head is a solo dance / physical theatre piece inspired by Wole Soyinka's prison notes, The Man Died. Qudus Onikeku, from Nigeria, explores the theme of solitude and forms of exile, looking especially at the contradiction between our mental idea of ?home' and the reality of the place one returns to. This fascinating work is sophisticated, slick and wonderfully enjoyable, filled with angst, beauty, resignation, acrobatic moves, high energy and a spirituality summed up in the voice-over: ?When I dance I am closer to God.'
Inception - Inception, originally performed in 2011, is a complex, textured dance solo, that has already evolved into a classic. It's an intensely physical and psychological journey into the psyche of a female artist. As the brooding sound of the Taj Mahal Travellers' music reverberates around the darkened auditorium, a presence emerges from the wings: a beautiful body lit by its headgear. The figure in this mining helmet / straw hat / diving gear turns out to be a woman, whose gazelle-like movement pulls her into a succinctly layered universe of experience.
