The Peony Pavilion - T557581605

The 16th century epic The Peony Pavilion is one of the most enduring love stories in Chinese literature. Originally performed as a Kunqu Opera in a 20-hour cycle, it is redrawn by director Li Liuyi and choreographer Fei Bo into a sublimely enchanting and pioneering two-act fusion ballet, combining Western style choreography with traditional Chinese influences. First premiered in 2008, the work features an eclectic postmodern score that references Holst, Prokofiev and Debussy.

Raise the Red Lantern - T1840883634

Raise the Red Lantern is the haunting tale of a concubine, sold by her mother into a stifling world of jealousy and resentment. Her love for an opera actor and the jealousy of a rival concubine lead to tragic consequences as the women compete for the raised red lantern which signals they are favoured by their master. The piece consists of 70 dancers incorporating the rich heritage of Chinese classical and folk dance into ballet. The dramatic atmosphere is enhanced by an orchestra of 70 musicans using both Western and traditional Chinese instruments.
