Nederlands Dans Theater 1, 'the flagship', was founded in 1959 and is highly successful all over the world. The dancers are all soloists and are not divided into categories, all have equal status. Wings of Wax is set to music by John Cage, von Biber, Philip Glass and Bach, it alludes to the myth of Icarus who flies so high the sun melts his wings. It opens with a dramatic image - a bare tree, hanging with its roots in mid-air above the stage whilst dancers in tight dark costumes, emerge out of the black background and spotlighted circle around the tree. Speak for Yourself is set to Bach's serene Kunst der Fuge. Eight dancers perform a series of intriguing duets and solos, restless movement contrasts with magical stillness in a rain-drenched and smoke-filled setting. Walking Mad is set to Maurice Ravel's Bolero for orchestra and Arvo Fur Alina for piano. His earthy, expressive style of movement allows him to portray the shy and helpless traits of man with hearty sentiment and infectious humour.
