Pas de Deux - T406154804The pas de deux, a symbol of accomplished form and technique, is one of the most emblematic figures of classical ballet - and in its very own way the duet by Raimund Hoghe and the Japanese dancer Takashi Ueno is a virtuoso performance as well. What separates and what unites us? In Pas de Deux, the first glance, the first movement remains constantly present, when the two dancers almost unnoticeably open up their worlds: their different ages, different bodies, journeys through life, recollections. Between introspection and the wealth of gestures in the history of dance, a movement dialogue develops. Approaching one another and repeatedly seeking distance, they play out the moment of encounter in ever new variants and nuances, slip into ever new roles for one another, with one another or alone, explore ever new possibilities of their relationship and also of their own view of themselves. In Pas de Deux, Raimund Hoghe develops his unmistakeable choreographic language and opposes the spectacular with poetry and an impressive attention to the human

Sans-Titre - T01269142409UK Premiere. One of Europe’s leading choreographers, Raimund Hoghe returns to the festival this year with a new duet for himself and Congolese choreographer and dancer, Faustin Linyekula. The title, Sans-titre, alludes to being 'without papers' or an illegal immigrant, and Hoghe’s work is a poignant and quiet complaint. The minimalist set and poetic use of objects contrasts with the captivating and fluid beauty of Linyekula, whose nimble and loose-limbed expression fills an otherwise sparse open space. Accompanied by the music of Bach, a path is forged through this touching and contemplative landscape, revealing a tender relationship between the two very different performers.

L'Apres-Midi - T02069065873UK Premiere. A leading figure in European dance, Raimund Hoghe makes his festival debut with L'Apres-midi, a solo for Emmanuel Eggermont. This remarkable work continues Hoghe’s passion for reinterpreting classics in the ballet repertoire which have included Sacre - The Rite of Spring (2004) and Swan Lake, 4 Acts (2005). Stéphane Mallarmé’s poem, L’Après-midi d’un faune inspired a symphonic work by Claude Debussy, to which Vaslav Nijinsky gave a choreographic interpretation that became legendary. A century later, Hoghe seizes this masterpiece and gives Eggermont the opportunity to follow in Nijinsky’s giant footsteps. Floating on the evocative music of Debussy and Mahler, the result is a poetic solo of technical brilliance that is as radiant as it is unique.
