Pond Way is the eighth Cunningham work to enter the Company's repertoire. Pond Way can be described as one of his 'nature studies'. It is a lyrical, contemplative, often sensuous piece, with the movement, according to Cunningham, being reminiscent of the game of skimming stones over a pond, which he loved to play as a child. The production is enriched with a backcloth from the artist Roy Lichtenstein and a soundscape by composer Brian Eno. bloom by Aletta Collins, is performed to infectious Romanian gypsy rhythms and has characters crashing in and out of focus in a giddy world and chaotic encounters. Collins' work spans dance, theatre, opera and film and bloom is her first collaboration with Rambert. Lady into Fox/Stand and Stare/Divine Influence/Verge - T0548587763Lady into Fox - inspired by Andree Howard's original 1939 creation - which last appeared in Ballet Rambert's repertoire 56 years ago. Transit, by Melanie Teall, is an exploration of space and movement for a solo female dancer, inspired by the phenomenon of the planet Venus in transit. (Performed on Wednesday and Friday evenings only). Pond Way/Constant Speed/Bloom - T0662435196Merce Cunningham is one of world’s most revered and enigmatic choreographers and Rambert is one of the few companies permitted to perform his work. Pond Way can be described as one of Cunningham's ‘nature studies’ where the movement evokes birds, animals or landscapes. It is a lyrical, contemplative and sensuous piece, with the movement, according to Cunningham, being reminiscent of the game of skimming stones over a pond, which he loved to play as a child. The production is further enriched with a backcloth from the visual artist Roy Lichtenstein and a soundscape by Brian Eno. Constant Speed, Baldwin’s first choreographic work as Artistic Director for Rambert, has been widely acclaimed for its novel and charming approach to physics. Commissioned by the Institute of Physics, Constant Speed has been inspired by three of Einstein’s key 1905 theories. The result is 19 of Rambert’s dancers whizzing around the stage like hyperactive molecules, in a joyous and athletic frenzy of movement. Performed to sparkling waltzes by Franz Lehár, this ingenious and witty piece succeeds in making physics intriguing and fun. Bloom - Drawing its inspiration from a variety of sources, ranging from 1970s romantic posters to contemporary gypsy music, Bloom explores the idea of creating that perfect romantic moment. Aletta's impressive theatre and film experience will play a large role in the cration of Bloom, using improvisation and character work to create movement and narrative for 16 of Rambert's dancers. Bloom is performed to music that includes tracks from the acclaimed Romanian gypsy band Taraf de Haidouks, with disigns by [Simon Daw] and lighting design by [Charles Balfour].Choreographer Merce Cunningham (Pond Way). Judgment of Paris/Divine Influence/Pond Way/Constant Speed - T0296915559Set to extracts from Kurt Weill's Threepenny Opera, Antony Tudor's Judgment of Paris is a sardonic take on the classical myth. This little Tudor gem was first performed by Rambert in 1940 and has been revived on several occasions since. Irony of Fate is a sublime duet for dancer and violinist. Virtuosity and passion come together, as the artists embark on a journey that takes them to the brink of exhaustion. In 1926 [Frederick Ashton] created his first ballet for Rambert, A Tragedy of Fashion. Best described as a dance/drama, this new version by [Ian Spink] is true to the original story line of fashion, art and suicide and is a theatrical production for all to enjoy. Swampis a modern dance at its most pure. Echoes of Clark's classical background are very evident there, but this only acts as a foundation for his originality and inventiveness.Choreographer Kim Brandstrup (Songs of a Wayfarer). Music Mahler (Songs of a Wayfarer). Choreographer Rafael Bonachela (Irony of Fate). Choreographer Ian Spink (A Tragedy of Fashion - after [Frederick Ashton]). Choreographer Michael Clark (Swamp). | |

Study from Blackbird/Hurricane/Living Toys/Ghost Dances - T02074944016The programme includes Jiri Kylian's sensuous duet Study from Blackbird that, like a blackbird's love song, resonates with emotion. Hurricane is a dramatic solo that tells the poignant story of Rubin 'Hurricane' Carter, the African/American boxer who was wrongfully imprisoned on a triple murder charge. Living Toys transports us into that precarious and surreal state where dreams and consciousness merge. Inspired by [Thomas Adès’]s dark and somewhat sinister score, this large-scale dance work promises to be a sensual and physically virtuosic spectacle. The ballet will be further enhanced by the live performance of the score by Rambert’s Associate Orchestra, [London Musici]. Land/Gaps, Lapse and Relapse/Grinning in Your Face - T0644673542Land - Bruce's emotionally-charged Land was inspired by Arne Nordheim's Warsawa. Although the music was written in response to that city's suffering during World War II, Land is symbolic of the tragedies suffered by any people whose homeland has been invaded and ravaged by war. Gaps, Lapse and Relapse - is a vigorous cocktail of dynamic dance and street style created by the late Jeremy James - one of Britain's most individual choreographers. Quirky mechanised gestures, abstracted from everyday images, are a hallmark of the choreography. Grinning In Your Face - The inspiration for this new work has come from the folk and blues album Grinning In Your Face, by the brilliant acoustic guitarist, banjo player and vocalist, Martin Simpson. Twin Suite 2 is a distinctive and individual work performed with attitude. Hurricane - Bruce's dramatic work for a solo dancer is performed to [Bob Dylan]'s song of the same title. Hurricane tells the story of Rubin 'Hurricane' Carter, a black American boxer who was framed and imprisoned on a triple murder charge. After serving 20 years, he was finally cleared of all the charges and released. Performed to a soundtrack of ten trombones, recorded in an enormous empty underground water tank, the music is enhanced by live musicians. This bitter-sweet snapshot into the life of a chorus-girl is decadent mixture of soul-searching and sequins, as rivals jostle one another for the limelight.
