Rhythm Is It! is a film documenting the first big educational project by the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra under Sir Simon Rattle, in which 250 young Berliners of 25 different nationalities and from different social backgrounds came together to create a piece of dance. The young people were strangers to classical music until they started their thrilling work with the orchestra (playing Stravinsky's The Rite of Spring) and British choreographer Royston Maldoom. Filmed through the eyes of three young participants, Rhythm is It! chronicles the project's development alternating from periods of doubt and uncertainty to moments bursting with enthusiasm and tremendous self-confidence. This mesmerising film from Thomas Grube and Enrique Sánchez Lansch offers a delightful and moving record of the process of creation as the young performers are drawn into the world of music and dance. Next year, choreographer Royston Maldoom will work with young people from across London to create a specially commissioned piece for Dance Umbrella 2008. Set to Shostakovich’s monumental Symphony No. 10, played live by the London Symphony Orchestra, this Dance Umbrella Commission will close the 2008 festival. To get a flavour of what’s in store next year, come and see this absorbing and inspiring film.
