Blow Over/To Dance and Skylark/Shuffle It Right
Alston’s Blow Over, set to Philip Glass’s Songs from Liquid Days, was co-commissioned in 2008 by Dance Umbrella and Sadler’s Wells, and premiered at Sadler’s Wells as part of Alston’s 60th birthday celebrations. o
Dance and Skylark - A piece for the full company of 10 dancers, it is set to Bach’s G Major and F Major Brandenburg Concertos. Lawrance’s high-spirited steps pick up on the elation of the glorious and enduringly popular music.
Shuffle It Right, commissioned by The DeBartolo Performing Arts Center, Notre Dame University, Indiana, is Alston’s 2008 tribute to the great American songwriter Hoagy Carmichael. Evoking a lazy summer in the Deep South, Shuffle It Right’s wit and expressive detail come to life with toe-tapping charm.
