Gypsy Mixture/Fingerprint/Brink
The guttural and fervent cries of Balkan singers form the basis of Richard Alston’s Gypsy Mixture. Remixed by a fantastic range of DJs from all over the world, gypsy influences are given a sharp twist, a grittier edge. Gypsy Mixture is about humanity fighting to keep its spirit against harsh and uncertain surroundings. In Fingerprint, Alston uses two pieces of keyboard music by J.S. Bach - Capriccio and Toccata In D Major - the first tinged with sadness, the second full of grand flourishes and galloping dance rhythm, to paint a picture of Bach’s brother Jakob’s departure for Sweden (from where he never returned). In Brink, fast-rising choreographer Martin Lawrance is inspired by Japanese composer Ayuo’s quirky Eurasian Tango.
