Contemporary dance. Richard Alston, Artistic Director of The Place, the UK's leading centre for contemporary dance, is internationally recognised as one of the most influential and inspiring choreographers in British dance. For his company’s eagerly awaited return to the Exeter Northcott, Richard Alston has chosen a diverse collection of composers including minimalist icon Steve Reich and 17th century lutenist Denis Gaultier. Alston’s contemporary classic Roughcut - a euphoric display of pure energy - is danced to the cascading peals of Steve Reich’s New York and Electric Counterpoints for clarinet and guitar. Very much inspired by the paintings of Vermeer, Light Flooding Into Darkened Rooms is accompanied by the quiet sensuality of Baroque lute music. Martin Lawrance’s tightly sprung Lie Of The Land is danced to modern American composer Ned Rorem’s String Quartet No. 4.
