As part of British Dance Edition London 2012, Russell Maliphant presents a special showing of his new dance piece, which returns to Sadler's Wells in October. For this work, Maliphant has collaborated with a group of extraordinary performers, using a movement vocabulary influenced by the dance forms of popping, breaking and contemporary dance, integrated through Maliphant's language of flow, form and dynamics. AfterLight - T2058699854

Hailed as a defining moment in Russell Maliphant's career when AfterLight first appeared at Sadler's Wells as a brief solo in 2009, this full-length version makes a welcome return for two nights only after its acclaimed premiere in September 2010. Inspired by photographs of Vaslav Nijinsky and his geometric drawings, AfterLight was developed by Maliphant with lighting designer Michael Hulls, a pairing that has been called "the most important creative partnership in modern British dance" (Daily Telegraph) and features projections evolved in collaboration with animator Jan Urbanowski.

Critical Mass/Shift/AfterLight (Part One) - T936262367

The programme includes a coveted live performance from Maliphant himself, and two other works that span his career as one of the leading choreographers of his generation - the recent AfterLight (Part One) performed by award-winning dancer Daniel Proietto, and a film screening of Maliphant’s early duet, Critical Mass. The film Critical Mass is a duet choreographed by Maliphant in 1998 and performed with Jordi Cortés Molina. A mesmerising cross between a wrestling match and a tango, this is a tale of two bodies so close that they seem to be driven by telepathic communication. Played out in three movements, Critical Mass features music by Richard English and Andy Cowton with lighting design by Maliphant’s long-term collaborator, Michael Hulls. Maliphant will then perform his popular solo work Shift created in 1996 in collaboration with Michael Hulls with music by Shirley Thompson. This subtle and hypnotic piece epitomises Maliphant’s exploration of light and movement. The dance is fractured and multiplied into multiple facets by the light, revealing delicate glimpses of radiance and darkness. The final performance of the evening is Maliphant’s recent work, AfterLight (Part One), performed by Daniel Proietto and inspired by the photographs and geometric drawings of Vaslav Nijinsky. Smooth curves and fluid lines are articulated by Proietto as Hull’s lighting opulently flows and ebbs throughout. The piece was originally commissioned as part of In the Spirit of Diaghilev at Sadler’s Wells in 2009 for which Proietto won Dance Europe’s ‘Outstanding Performance of the Year’ award. This engaging and varied program is a rare opportunity to witness Maliphant’s signature work in an intimate setting.

New Work/Push - T583278622

Russell Maliphant's language is one of form and dynamics - elegant, articulate and resonant. After choreographing last October's critically acclaimed PUSH, he now brings his full Company to Sadler's Wells, with a programme which includes two brand new works. Maliphant draws on his experience of Capoeira, Tai Chi and Yoga to produce a unique style of choreography. Focusing on the relationship between movement, light and music, his work is characterised by its fluidity and form. 2004 marked the tenth anniversary of collaboration between Maliphant and the pioneering lighting designer [Michael Hulls]; this new programme is a celebration of this outstanding creative partnership. Maliphant's new work, created for 5 dancers, takes his exploration of dynamics and tensions into new territory, married with Hull's brilliant lighting and an evocative and sculptural soundscape by [Mukul]. The programme also includes a new male solo and Push, Maliphant's duet with Sylvie Guillem which has now been reworked for his own dancers, with music by Andy Cowton.Choreographer Russell Maliphant.
