This evening brings together innovators of Indian dance and music from two different perspectives. In a UK premiere, Chennai-based dancer Malavika Sarukkai performs one of her trademark Bharata Natyam solos, 'Ganga Nitya Vaahini' (The Eternal River). This piece, performed to live music and song, is inspired by her love of the Indian river the Ganges. Renowned for extending the boundaries of the Bharata Natyam repertoire with a deep sense of improvisation and a complete mastery of her art form, she focuses on a creating a vibrant landscape of textures taking us on a philosophical and emotionally journey. We then welcome five-piece band SAMAY to the stage, with guest artist Sunil Kant Gupta on Bansuri. At the heart of SAMAY is a unique blend of merging styles and instruments. The band features highly accomplished musicians from India and Europe, combining traditional forms with a range of contemporary influences to reinvent the sound of Indian music. Jazz, flamenco, samba, funk and chill are effortlessly combined in a colourful and seamlessly woven evening of music. The band is joined by Sunil Kant Gupta on Bansuri (flute) known for his sensual musical quality and his constantly innovative spirit.
