Production details

Offenbach in the Underworld - is a surreal fantasy in which the famous 19th century French composer Jacques Offenbach returns to his homeland in the 20th century, where he meets such modernists as Stravinsky and Picasso. An ironic - yet light hearted - battle ensues between the 'traditional' and the 'modern'. Robert North sets his ballet to some of Offenbach's most popular music - including excerpts from Gaite Parisienne, La Belle Helene and Le Papillon as well as three Stravinsky Etudes. As a curtain raiser to Offenbach the creative team of North and Storer have created Miniatures a ballet set to Stravinsky's Suites for Small Orchestra and his Eight Instrumental Miniatures. The designs are inspired by Matisse; the choreography is an inventive mix of the classical and contemporary.
