Ride the Beast/In Light and Shadow/Othello/Lull

Ride the Beast - Scottish Ballet dancers wrestle with the wild nature of the unknown, welding their classical technique to the raw power of Petronio's rolling signature language. They soar and shudder to some of Radiohead's best known music to create something startling, a celebration of pure energy and aggressive creativity. Summer Season 2008 will be the first time that Ride the Beast has been performed outside the Edinburgh International Festival where it premiered last year to much critical and audience acclaim. In Light and Shadow - Inspired by a range of Baroque dances and painters including Vermeer, Rembrandt and La Tour the ballet focuses on the interplay of light and shadow as über-contemporary lines are juxtaposed with the rich and celebratory music of Bach. Pastor describes In Light & Shadow as being as detailed as Michelangelo’s Sistine Chapel Fresco where ornate features contrast with light and shadow. Othello - Othello is one of Scottish Ballet’s founder Peter Darrell’s key works, presenting Shakespeare’s epic tragedy as a powerful and dramatic one-act ballet. Choreographed to the haunting music of Liszt’s A Faust Symphony, Darrell’s fast moving and terse Othello takes a fresh look at Shakespeare’s classic through the eyes of the villain Iago whose evil plotting brings the ballet to a heart-rending conclusion. Lull - Scottish Ballet is thrilled to have commissioned soloist Diana Loosmore’s third work which premieres as part of Summer Season 2008. Diana won the Peter Darrell Award in 2007 and is a growing choreographic force within Scottish Ballet. This powerful piece draws from the fusion of classical music and jazz of Mercury Music Prize 2007 nominees Basquiat Strings.
