Rubies is taken from George Balanchine's full-length work Jewels, which was inspired by New York jewellery designer Claude Arpels. Crisp and witty, Rubies contains some of Balanchine's most dazzling and virtuosic dance. Apollo marked the start of Balanchine's life-long association with Stravinsky and was the ballet that first brought him international acclaim. Created for Diaghilev's Ballets Russes, the ballet depicts Apollo, the young god of music, being instructed by the muses of dance, song, poetry and mime. The season will also include three works by Scottish Ballet's acclaimed Artistic Director, Ashley Page. The Pump Room Page's latest ballet, is a highly charged work for two couples featuring a pounding score by Nine Inch Nails/Aphex Twin. Walking in the Heat is a sultry, sensuous duet whilst Scottish Ballet's signature piece 32 Cryptograms celebrates this powerful talent of the Company's dancers with stylish show of vigour and elegance.
