Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui/Antony Gormley/Shaolin Monks - Sutra archiveCelebrated Flemish/Moroccan choreographer Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui is one of Europe's most exciting dancer-choreographers. For Sutra he once again joins forces with Turner Prize-winning artist Antony Gormley, who has created a striking design consisting of 21 wooden boxes, which shift and evolve into an ever-changing environment - moving the action from a vast ocean, to the petals of a lotus flower, before smashing against each other with gut-wrenching force. Polish composer Szymon Brzóska has created a beautiful new score for piano, percussion and strings, which is played live. Performed by 17 monks from the original Shaolin Temple in China, along with Larbi himself, Sutra is a fascinating exploration of the philosophy and faith behind the Shaolin tradition, its relationship with Kung-Fu, and its position within a contemporary context.
