Aomori is a prefecture of Japan in the region of Tsugaru, at the Northern most tip of Honshu Island, with long arctic winters. This duet forms part of the Aomori Project, an ongoing performance and research project since 2008, featuring dancers, musicians and singers from northern Japan, the UK and Europe. Duration: 45 minutesChoreographer Sioned Huws. Choreographer Reina Kimura.

Aomori Project: Of Landscapes Remembered Aomori - T1927640371

Aomori is an area of Japan at the northernmost tip of Honshu Island, with short summers and long snowy winters. Forests of blue-green, soft linear mountains and seas of a deep navy blue enliven feelings with colour in autumn. In winter, repetitive silent snowfall arrives, transforming the landscape; the heartbeat slows down, the body is overwhelmed by a desire to rest, to lay horizontally in this blanket of white. The sounds, songs and dances of Tsugaru personify these landscapes. How do an environment, place and people inspire an artist’s work? This winter, choreographer Sioned Huws continued a series of residencies at Aomori Contemporary Art Centre, collaborating with a company of artists.Performer Raina Kimura (dancer). Performer Yoshlya Ishikawa (dancer). Performer Juji Hasegawa (musician). Performer Hushin Hasegawa (musician). Performer Klyoko Goto (minyo singer).

Aomori Project - T823349216

Earlier this year choreographer Sioned Huws was on a residency at Aomori Contemporary Arts Centre in northern Japan, where in deep winter there are continuous snow storms. "The repetitive action of snow falling slows the heart-beat, as the body is overwhelmed by a desire to be still. The repetitive, silent snow fall, has no sympathy. In these extreme situations the body has no choice but to challenge its own desires." Dancer Reina Kimura from Aomori joins Sioned on a cultural exchange residency at Chapter during June and July to complete this new work.Performer Sioned Huws. Performer Reina Kimura.

Passion No Patience - T1641356837

Incorporating video projection, motion capture systems and web streaming, Passion No Patience questions time and stillness and explores the architecture of the human body. Wired up to a series of monitors, the five dancers become finely constructed machines, providing a direct link between the technology and the performance space. Motion capture sensors, record a variety of movement, including changes in facial expression and these images are stored and manipulated during the show. Digital wireless stethoscopes amplify the sound of the company's heartbeats as the performance progresses. As exertion increases, heart rates quicken and the sound, lighting, rhythm and colour of the piece intensifies.

Dear Body - T0210265093

Sioned started performing solo in new York in 1989-91, Dear Body is her latest solo work choreographed as a dialogue between the body itself in relation to objects, place, light and the viewer. The body is alive, a construction of bone, a whole emotional structure, leaning against, sitting on, to stand in the world in relation to other things. The muscles respond to thought, thoughts pass quickly and every thought is supported by a feeling. The skin is the outer layer covering the surface of the body, the limit. Left with yourself, looking at, to move and be moved.
