Les Sylphides/Paquita
La Sylphide inaugurated the traditional image of a ballerina in a long gauzy white skirt, and heralded a new era of ballet where dance was an integral part of the story, with sets, costumes and lighting combining to give a magical atmosphere. The story follows a Scots peasant who forsakes his intended bride for the Sylphide who visits him in his dreams.
Paquita is set in Spain during the Napoleonic occupation. The virtuous and brave gypsy girl of the title saves a French officer from an assassination plot and the dazzling solo and ensemble dances were designed to show off spectacular technique. Accompanied by a 25-piece orchestra.
