Production details

A HEADY mix of dance, drums, traditional Bengali music, and Alice in Wonderland launches at Waterman's Arts Centre in April as FIPA brings the epic Tasher Desh to life as it's never been seen before. Tasher Desh, which translates literally as 'Land of Cards', is an Indian dance opera written more than half a century ago. Author Tagore, a great friend of Gandhi's, was inspired directly by Alice in Wonderland and Western opera when he wrote the piece. It tells of a Prince and Merchant who arrive on an island of segregated clans and then set about encouraging them to mix. Popular across India, this is the first time that a glorious and innovative full length version of the show is being explored by artists based in the UK. Artistic director for Tasher Desh is award-winning multidisciplinary artist, Hi Ching. Hi Ching trained at the Royal Ballet School and Guildhall School of Music and Drama, is an artist who thrives on variety, new challenges and is not a person who is easily categorised. His wide experience as a performing artist in acting and dance together with numerous projects where he has stage directed, scripted, composed, and choreographed reflects his eclectic upbringing in Singapore. Far from being a Jack of all Trades, he has assumed significant lead roles on television, won prizes for his writing and music compositions, and approaches everything he creates with a sense of global understanding and artistic vision.
