Kenneth MacMillan's 1965 ballet Song of the Earth uses Mahler's song cycle Das Lied von der Erde to tell of man's temporal state on the eternal earth. It is paired with Fredrick Ashton's The Dream, based on Fredrick Ashton's A Midsummer Night's Dream and set to music by Mendelssohn.
