Two of ballet’s greatest choreographers, George Balanchine and Jerome Robbins, share a fascinating triple bill. Set to Mendelssohn’s vibrant music and inspired by nineteenth-century romantic ballet, Balanchine’s Scotch Symphony is a poetic vision of the rugged Scottish landscape and its colourful military tattoos. The grandeur of imperial St. Petersburg infuses the Mariinsky’s performances of Ballet Imperial, Balanchine’s great tribute to Petipa and Tchaikovsky. The centrepiece of the programme, In the Night, set to Chopin’s nocturnes, is Jerome Robbins’ mesmerising exploration of the ecstasies and sufferings of three couples, in turn passionate, lyrical, turbulent and sensual.
