Danses Concertante S/Different Drummer/Requiem - T417020332

The Royal Ballet celebrates the breadth of Principal Choreographer Kenneth MacMillan's one-act ballets. Danses Concertantes, commissioned by Ninette de Valois in 1955, was MacMillan's first major work. An early sign of the incredible artistic output that would follow, the work's critical success spurred MacMillan to abandon performing in favour of choreography. It is followed by Different Drummer, MacMillan's complex and haunting balletic interpretation of Woyzeck, Georg Büchner's play about a soldier's descent into madness. The mixed programme concludes with Requiem, his 1976 work for Stuttgart Ballet, created in memory of its late artistic director, MacMillan's friend and former Royal Ballet dancer and choreographer John Cranko.

Anemoi/The Cellist - T2057733646

Anemoi was created by First Soloist Valentino Zucchetti in 2021, emerging out of lockdown in energetic swathes of classical movement. Inspired by the Greek wind gods, Anemoi exemplifies the homegrown choreographer's sophisticated contemporary style. Cathy Marston's flair for emotive storytelling shines through in The Cellist, a lyrical memoir of cellist Jacqueline du Pré's life, which was tragically cut short by multiple sclerosis. Rich, poignant, joyous and tragic, the ballet is set to an exquisite score, itself a homage to the cello.

Beauty Mixed Programme: Anemoi/The Sleeping Beauty Act III - T02007000261

Ninety years ago Dame Ninette de Valois created what we know now as The Royal Ballet. Her vision for the Company and desire for her successors to venture forward as 'adventurous traditionalists' is reflected in this varied programme of classics and new work. The programme opens with the world premiere of Anemoi by First Soloist Valentino Zucchetti who develops his ballet Scherzo created especially for the youngest members of the Company and streamed so successfully last autumn. Inspired by Greek mythology where Anemoi gods personify the winds, this uplifting creation ushers in brighter times with positive winds of change and the warm arrival of spring. A selection of short works follows, by choreographers who have shaped The Royal Ballet's history and pushed the boundaries of ballet today. The programme is completed by The Sleeping Beauty Act III. De Valois selected Petipa's classic to launch her company at Sadler's Wells Theatre on 15 May 1931. She presented a new production of the ballet for the reopening of the Royal Opera House 75 years ago in 1946, when the Company made its new home there after the war. The burst of colour and optimism in the final act of this revival, lovingly restaged by Monica Mason and Christopher Newton, marks not only these two anniversaries for The Royal Ballet but also the ebullient mood of the Company's return to the stage in 2021.

Balanchine and Robbins: Apollo/Tchaikovsky Pas de Deux/Dances at a Gathering - T1460839559

The rich history of American ballet is celebrated in classic works by George Balanchine and Jerome Robbins, two choreographic giants of the 20th century. Apollo brought Balanchine together for the first time with composer Igor Stravinsky. Their creation for Diaghilev's Ballets Russes in 1928 remains a masterpiece of neoclassicism in its striking depiction of the young god of music and his three muses. Balanchine's effervescent Tchaikovsky Pas de Deux breathes life into a long-lost movement from Tchaikovsky's original score for Swan Lake. Created in 1960 for virtuoso New York City Ballet dancers Violette Verdy and Conrad Ludlow, its thrilling technical challenges are still relished by performers today. Jerome Robbins, a contemporary of Balanchine, played a crucial role in the development of American ballet but was also as an influential figure on Broadway. His 1969 ballet Dances at a Gathering, to music by Chopin, is an ode to pure dance. As Robbins himself described it: 'There are no stories to any of the dances in Dances at a Gathering. There are no plots and no roles. The dancers are themselves dancing with each other to that music in that place.' While plotless, the ballet's intimacy creates a powerful sense of community, which promises to resonate with audiences and dancers again following its revival in 2020 just before lockdown.

Petipa's Raymonda Act III is Russian classical ballet summarized in one act, full of sparkle and precise technique, while Ashton's Enigma Variations is quintessentially British in every way - from its score by Elgar and period designs by Julia Trevelyan Oman, to Ashton's signature style, the essence of British ballet. Concerto, MacMillan's fusion of classical technique with a contemporary mind, completes a programme that shows the breadth of the Company's heritage.Choreographer Kenneth MacMillan (Concerto). The Firebird/A Month in the Country/Symphony in C - T1696996269

The flash of a firebird, a family sent into a spin and a classical ballet explosion. Michel Fokine's The Firebird with Igor Stravinsky's music is a ground-breaking classic of the early 20th-century that draws on the story, sound and look of Russian folk art. Ivan Turgenev's play A Month in the Country inspired Frederick Ashton's study of the emotional chaos a young tutor brings to household routine. Ashton created dazzling and fast footwork alongside expressive character portraits to music by Fryderyk Chopin. Symphony in C is pure dance with Russian-born George Balanchine's brilliant edge. His choreography draws from the classical Imperial ballet of his youth and matches it to the music of Georges Bizet's exuberant and inventive symphony.Choreographer Fokine. Choreographer Ashton. Asphodel Meadows/The Two Pigeons - T1285062728

Sheer romantic charm sums up Ashton's version of The Two Pigeons (1961). It has Messager's ever-tuneful score alongside a touching love story of a brief flirtation that threatens a young couple's relationship. The imagery of birds is wittily part of the choreography that contrasts bohemian Paris with the darker passions of a gypsy camp. Liam Scarlett's Asphodel Meadows was enthusiastically acclaimed at its premiere in 2010. Set to music by another French composer, Poulenc, it shows how the line and lyricism of Ashton continue into the contemporary Royal Ballet repertory and defining style.Music Messager. Music Poulenc. Obsidian Tear/Marguerite and Armand/Elite Syncopations - T02054428111

Frederick Ashton created Marguerite and Armand for Rudolf Nureyev and Margot Fonteyn in 1963, as a celebration of their unique dance partnership. The narrative was drawn from the play La Dame aux camelias by Alexandre Dumas fils, which also inspired Giuseppe Verdi's opera La traviata. Ashton concentrates the play's tragic essence in choreography of great intensity - Fonteyn recalled that rehearsals for the work contained 'a passion more real than life itself'. The ballet is set to Franz Liszt's La lugubre gondola and his famous Piano Sonata in B Minor. It depicts the burgeoning love between Marguerite and Armand, movingly expressed through passionate lifts and increasingly free movements. However, the lovers' happiness is threatened by social convention and the 'gilded cage' in which Marguerite lives - evoked by Cecil Beaton in his elegant stage designs. The final pas de deux, as Marguerite lies dying in Armand's arms, is among the most moving in Ashton's output.Choreographer Frederick Ashton. Conductor Tom Seligman. Music Dudley Simpson (orchestration). Design Cecil Beaton. Lighting John B Read.

New Christopher Wheeldon/The Age of Anxiety/New Christopher Wheeldon - T901486601

In a New York bar in wartime four lonely strangers attempt to find spiritual meaning in an industrialized world. The Royal Ballet's Artist in Residence Liam Scarlett created The Age of Anxiety on the Company in 2014. After his dark, probing narrative works Sweet Violets and Hansel and Gretel he turned to Leonard Bernstein's Second Symphony and the epic poem by W.H. Auden that inspired it. As the Evening Standard wrote at the ballet's premiere, 'Scarlett's bitter-sweet take on American modernism... brilliantly conveys the sadness beneath the skin'. Bernstein had an intense emotional response to Auden's poem, which explores the atmosphere of disillusionment and uncertainty that followed World War II; he later wrote that '00000When I first read the book I was breathless'. In the symphony this deep personal resonance is married with Bernstein's instinctive sense of rhythm, which has made his music so ideal for dance. John Macfarlane, who has collaborated with Scarlett on all his main-stage works for The Royal Ballet, provides designs 'superb in detail and atmosphere' (The Guardian)Choreographer Christopher Wheeldon. Kenneth MacMillan: a National Celebration - The Judas Tree - T2001952047

On a building site in London's *East End, the Foreman's jealousy and betrayal bring about events of appalling violence. Kenneth MacMillan's The Judas Tree is his final ballet, and still his most controversial. MacMillan commissioned a score from Brian Elias for the ballet, which had its premiere in 1992. Both MacMillan and Elias were inspired not only by Biblical stories of betrayal but also by contemporary events - the violence in Tiananmen Square; the creation of the financial district in Canary Wharf. As MacMillan admitted of the finished work, 'There are things in me that are untapped and that have come out in this ballet that I find frightening'.Choreographer Kenneth MacMillan. Jeux - T1091880394

The Royal Ballet performs Jeux as part of Kenneth MacMillan: a National Celebration, a festival bringing together leading British dance companies to celebrate MacMillan's legacy, on the 25th anniversary of his death. The pioneering Russian dancer and choreographer Vaslav Nijinsky created Jeux in 1913, to a wonderful commissioned score by Debussy. As with Nijinsky's scandalous ballet The Rite of Spring from the same year, the original choreography for Jeux has been lost ? but in 1980, for Herbert Ross's film Nijinsky, Kenneth MacMillan reconstructed elements of both ballets, drawing on photographs and his own choreographic sensibility to construct a living idea of Nijinsky's original.Choreographer Wayne Eagling (after Kenneth MacMillan). The Dream/New Marriott/The Concert - T6593611

This Royal Ballet mixed programme opens with a classic by Frederick Ashton, based on Mendelssohn's delicate score and the plot of Shakespeare's A Midsummer's Night Dream. In a magical nocturnal world, Oberon and Titania play games with unwitting mortals, while the mischievous Puck intensifies love's comic confusions. The ballet's fleet footwork and gentle humour show Ashton at his brilliant best. A new work for The Royal Ballet by Alastair Marriott is at the heart of the evening. Following last year's successful 'Trespass' - with Christopher Wheeldon as part of Metamorphosis: Titian 2012 - Marriott's fifth work for the Company on the main stage is an exciting collaboration with acclaimed designer Es Devlin and lighting designer Bruno Poet. The programme ends in superb style with The Concert. This humorous, beautifully crafted ballet by Jerome Robbins is a superbly witty spoof of a classical music concert. As a pianist performs Chopin, the audience allow their minds to wander and their resulting fantasies take flight.Choreographer Frederick Ashton (The Dream). Music Felix Mendelssohn (The Dream). Serenade/Sweet Violets/DGV Danse a grande vitesse - T02070842140

The opening of George Balanchine's Serenade is unforgettable: on a blue-lit stage, women stand motionless in filmy blue dresses with single arms held high. Balanchine's ethereal choreography is the perfect complement to Tchaikovsky's soaring Serenade for Strings, both atmospheric and emotionally subtle. A seedy Victorian underworld provides the setting for Liam Scarlett's Sweet Violets. His inspiration is the work of artist Walter Sickert, whose ?Camden Town Murder' paintings were based on the gruesome murders of Jack the Ripper. Scarlett's classical sensibility teamed with a deep emotional punch makes Sweet Violets a disturbing and enthralling experience. Hurtling forward into a 21st-century aesthetic, Christopher Wheeldon's award-winning DGV: Danse ? grande vitesse brings the programme to an exhilarating close. The ballet was inspired by the French high-speed train line TGV and is set to a propulsive score by Michael Nyman. Wheeldon's choreography is a modern paean to our hi-tech age - brittle and brilliant.Choreographer George Balanchine (Serenade). Music Pyotr Il'yich Tchaikovsky (Serenade). Rhapsody/Wayne McGregor/Gloria - T1876438046

In 1980 Frederick Ashton created Rhapsody to celebrate the distinctive techniques of Mikhail Baryshnikov and Lesley Collier, using Rachmaninoff's exhilarating Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini. The energy and style of the two solo roles beautifully complement the virtuoso piano playing. Royal Ballet Resident Choreographer Wayne McGregor continues to explore the connections between the arts in his keenly anticipated new ballet, which is set to music by J.S. Bach. The work is brought to the main stage with designs by Tauba Auerbach and lighting designs by Lucy Carter. The programme is brought to a close by Gloria, MacMillan's poignant tribute to the fallen of World War I, set to Poulenc's sublime choral music. As soldiers stagger across a barren landscape, they encounter ghostly figures in grey - angels who both comfort them and lead them towards death. Gloria is another searing MacMillan masterpiece.Choreographer Frederick Ashton (Rhapsody). Music Sergey Rachmaninoff (Rhapsody). Design Jessica Curtis (Rhapsody). Costume Jessica Curtis (Rhapsody). Chroma/New Dawson/The Rite of Spring - T118281895

Chroma provides the sensational opening for this Royal Ballet mixed programme. With its stark white set, designed by architect John Pawson, and costumes that outline the body's contours as the dancers explore their physical limits, Wayne McGregor's Chroma looks as groundbreaking today as it did at its 2006 premiere. Former Royal Ballet School pupil David Dawson is much admired in Europe for his boldly imaginative choreography. His first work for The Royal Ballet is eagerly awaited. Dawson has chosen music by electronic artist Greg Haines and will work with designers Eno Henze and Yumiko Takeshima to bring his distinctive vision to the stage. Kenneth MacMillan's The Rite of Spring brings the programme to a cathartic close. One hundred years after its premiere, Stravinsky's propulsive music still has the power to shock. MacMillan's choreography demands attention too, not least through the stunning use of the corps de ballet. Sets and costumes in sunbaked yellows and reds by Sidney Nolan intensify the increasingly frenzied atmosphere.Choreographer Wayne McGregor (Chroma). Music Joby Talbot (Chroma). La Valse - A large corps de ballet whirls across the stage and three couples dance pas de deux, evoking a nostalgic vision of a 19th-century ballroom. Voices of Spring - A ballerina and her partner follow the swirling melodies of Johann Strauss II's Fruhlingsstimmen waltz with show-stopping choreography. Monotones I and II - These two short, non-narrative ballets each present an extended pas de trois that is perfectly matched to Satie's haunting piano music. Polyphonia/Sweet Violets/Carbon Life - T1508140155

Two of the world's leading choreographers of today and one fast-rising star come together in a programme of contemporary brilliance with two world premieres. After the extraordinary success of Liam Scarlett's debut work for the main stage last Season, Asphodel Meadows - already revived this Season - comes a new ballet. Scarlett has already won audiences with his unique combination of classical training, musical sensitivity and inventive choreography, so this premiere is definitely one to see. ?Romantic with modern twists' is how Christopher Wheeldon has described his modern classic Polyphonia. Rhapsody/Sensorium/Still Life at the Penguin Cafe - T01731171109

The variety in this mixed programme makes it enticing as much for anyone just discovering the thrill of worldclass dance as for Royal Ballet regulars. It is a great combination of virtuosity, contrasting moods and beautiful images, with music to match. Rhapsody was created by Frederick Ashton for Mikhail Baryshnikov and Lesley Collier, with choreography to suit their star reputations. It is a fabulous work for today’s Royal Ballet virtuoso dancers, contrasting lyrical pas de deux with astounding solos. Alastair Marriott’s Sensorium - in its first revival - is a response to the evolving atmospheres of Debussy Préludes, within warm and spacious designs and with undercurrents of intimacy. David Bintley’s ‘Still Life’ at the Penguin Café is a famously popular ballet, not seen in full at the Royal Opera House since 1993. With a timely theme of protection and preservation of the natural world, it is joyful, amusing, exuberant and provocative as endangered species take to the stage in dancing styles from ballroom to morris, introduced by penguin waiters. A riot of dance and colour, it brings the whole programme to a poignant and perfect end.Music Rachmaninoff (Rhapsody). Choreographer Frederick Ashton (Rhapsody). Design Jessica Curtis (Rhapsody). Peter and the Wolf/Tales of Beatrix Potter - T46443861

Family fun, beautiful dance and generous helpings of colour, wit and charm. Matthew Hart's wonderfully inventive version of Peter and the Wolf, choreographed for The Royal Ballet School, has an energy all its own as it portrays the scenes of young Peter and his naively valiant attempts at hunting. Peter's Grandfather, a cat, a duck - even the forest trees and greenery - act out the events that leave Peter triumphant and the wolf his captive. The delightful Tales of Beatrix Potter is danced by The Royal Ballet. Brilliant characterizations with detailed designs and costumes bring to life such lovable figures as Jemima Puddle-Duck, the dapper frog Jeremy Fisher, and the irrepressible Peter Rabbit. Les Sylphides/Sensorium/The Firebird - T1647100118

Originally called Chopiniana, Les Sylphides, seen this Season in a new staging my [Monica Mason], is set to a sequence of [Frederic Chopin]'s polonaises, mazurkas and waltzes for piano. [Mikhail Fokine]'s choreography recreates the soft lines and lilting ballon of the Romantic style as a poet dances with a group of winged forest sprites or "sylphides". British choreographer [Alastair Marriott] who has enjoyed critical and audience acclaim with new work Sensorium created for The Royal Ballet's First Drafts in the Clore and Being and Having Been as part of the Inspired by Diaghilev Programme in the Linbury 2004 makes his third main stage work for the Company. His two previous main stage ballets are Tanglewood (2005) and Children of Adam (2007). The Firebird was commissioned by [Serge Diaghilev] for Ballet Russes in 1910 and has subsequently been reworked by many choreographers, including both [George Balanchine] and [Jerome Robbins]. In 1926 Diaghilev commissioned [Natalia Gontcharova] to redesign The Firebird after deterioration of the original Golovine designs. She produced a dazzling array of vibrant costumes and one of the most glorious and memorable backcloths used in ballet. The narrative, based on various Russian folk tales, follows Prince Ivan as he captures a magical firebird while out hunting and, in exchange for her freedom, he is given one of her feathers. Ivan then encounters a group of young women, led by the beautiful Tsarevna with whom he instantly falls in love only to be captured by the evil Kostchei's slaves and monsters. He summons the Firebird with her feather and she destroys Kostchei, freeing both Prince Ivan and the Tsarevna who marry in the ballet's magnificent final tableau.Producer Royal Ballet. Isadora/Dances at a Gathering - T1750610588

[Deborah MacMillan] has devised a new one act production of [Kenneth MacMillan]'s rarely performed ballet Isadora. The original two act ballet premiered in April 1981 as part of The Royal Ballet's 50th Anniversary Season and the title role was performed by Merle Park and actress, Mary Miller. 20th Century dancer Isadora Duncan was an innovator and free-spirit, a hippy before her time who wanted the whole world to dance in the interests of peace, harmony and love Deborah MacMillan has completely revised the original ballet. In this new production the leading role belongs wholly to a dancer who is accompanied by the recorded voice of an actress, the original score of [Richard Rodney Bennett], and video montage by [Christopher Bird] and [Lynn Wake] which includes archive film from Isadora's heyday. Isadora is paired in a double bill with Jerome Robbins' one act ballet, Dances at a Gathering, last performed as part of the 2007/08 Season alongside The Dream. [Jerome Robbins] originally conceived Dances at a Gathering as a Pas de deux. Developing his theme he widened his musical selection to include etudes, waltzes, mazurkas, a nocturne and a scherzo. The ballet follows a group of friends and lovers exploring their past and present through a series of dances that respond to [Frederic Chopin]'s music, changes in the surrounding landscape and the mood of the ever-changing sky.Producer Royal Ballet. Conductor Barry Wordsworth. Music Richard Rodney Bennett (Isadora). Choreographer Kenneth MacMillan (Isadora). Other Julie Lincoln (staging - Isadora). Seven Deadly Sins/Carmen/DGV Danse A Grande Vitesse) - T1398328913

[Will Tuckett]'s 2007 production of the Brecht/Weill Seven Deadly Sins follows the story of Anna, a singer and dancer, as she travels around America trying to scrap money together so that she can build a home for her family. In each of the cities she visits, she encounters one of the seven deadly sins Tuckett is established as one of the foremost choreographers and directors working on stage and screen today. He has enjoyed great critical and audience acclaim for his productions on the Royal Opera House main stage, in the Linbury Studio Theatre, with Opera North, BBC and Channel 4. [Mats Ek] is famous for his vividly theatrical alternatives of the classics and his take on [Georges Bizet]'s celebrated opera Carmen, which he created in 1992 for the Cullberg Ballet, is no exception. A predatory Carmen leads the sexual games, while the pathos of the piece is left for Don Jose. [Mats Ek] uses Bizet's score, transcribed for strings and percussion by [Rodion Shehedrin], with designs by [Marie-Louse Ekman] that take a modern perspective on traditional Spanish motifs. DGV (Danse a grande vitesse), choreographed by [Christopher Wheeldon] is inspired by [Michael Nyman]'s 26-minute long composition: MGV (Musique a grande vitesse), which was written to commemorate the inauguration of the French 'train a grande vitesse'. The 26 dancers and minimalist score work together to transport the audience through varying landscapes capturing the feeling of being suspended in time and space. With set designs by award-winning designer [Jean-Marc Puissant], DGV returns following its critically-acclaimed world premiere at The Royal Opera House in 2006.Producer Royal Ballet. Voluntaries/The Lesson/New McGregor - T1734951777

[Eugene Ionesco]'s chilling drama The Lesson was first choreographed for television by the Danish dancer and choreographer Flemming Flindt in 1963 and entered The Royal Ballet's repertory in 2005. In a dimly lit ballet studio an eager young dance student experiences more than she anticipates at the hands of a murderous ballet teacher, while the rehearsal pianist remains frighteningly detached. Voluntaries, premiered in December 1973 by the Stuttgart Ballet, is [Glen Tetley]'s breathtakingly beautiful tribute to John Cranko who had died suddenly earlier that year. The ballet is set to [Poulenc]'s Concerto in G minor for Organ, Strings and Timpani. Voluntaries - by musical definition - are free ranging improvisations, often played before, during and after religious service. The Latin root of the word can also signify flight or desire, and the ballet is conceived as a series of linked voluntaries. A new work from The Royal Ballet's multi award-winning Resident Choreographer [Wayne McGregor] completes the programme.Producer Royal Ballet. Conductor Daniel Capps. Conductor Barry Wordsworth.
