Polyphonia/Sweet Violets/Carbon Life - T1508140155

Two of the world's leading choreographers of today and one fast-rising star come together in a programme of contemporary brilliance with two world premieres. After the extraordinary success of Liam Scarlett's debut work for the main stage last Season, Asphodel Meadows - already revived this Season - comes a new ballet. Scarlett has already won audiences with his unique combination of classical training, musical sensitivity and inventive choreography, so this premiere is definitely one to see. ?Romantic with modern twists' is how Christopher Wheeldon has described his modern classic Polyphonia. Last presented by The Royal Ballet in 2006, its dynamic opening and closing ensembles frame a series of beautifully crafted episodes of varying emotion and mood set to Ligeti's intense and virtuoso piano music. The final work is a new piece by Wayne McGregor, Resident Choreographer of The Royal Ballet. Each year he has pushed the boundaries of dance, with the virtuoso technique of the Company as just a starting point for his fascinating and award-winning inventive collaborations. With pop and fashion as the theme, McGregor joins forces with Gareth Pugh, Mark Ronson, Andrew Wyatt and guest artists. It is a fitting end for a programme that draws the classical and contemporary together in an explosion of today's brightest talents.Choreographer Christopher Wheeldon (Polyphonia). Rhapsody/Sensorium/Still Life at the Penguin Cafe - T01731171109

The variety in this mixed programme makes it enticing as much for anyone just discovering the thrill of worldclass dance as for Royal Ballet regulars. It is a great combination of virtuosity, contrasting moods and beautiful images, with music to match. Rhapsody was created by Frederick Ashton for Mikhail Baryshnikov and Lesley Collier, with choreography to suit their star reputations. It is a fabulous work for today’s Royal Ballet virtuoso dancers, contrasting lyrical pas de deux with astounding solos. Alastair Marriott’s Sensorium - in its first revival - is a response to the evolving atmospheres of Debussy Préludes, within warm and spacious designs and with undercurrents of intimacy. David Bintley’s ‘Still Life’ at the Penguin Café is a famously popular ballet, not seen in full at the Royal Opera House since 1993. With a timely theme of protection and preservation of the natural world, it is joyful, amusing, exuberant and provocative as endangered species take to the stage in dancing styles from ballroom to morris, introduced by penguin waiters. A riot of dance and colour, it brings the whole programme to a poignant and perfect end.Music Rachmaninoff (Rhapsody). Choreographer Frederick Ashton (Rhapsody). Design Jessica Curtis (Rhapsody). Les Sylphides/Sensorium/The Firebird - T1647100118

Originally called Chopiniana, Les Sylphides, seen this Season in a new staging my [Monica Mason], is set to a sequence of [Frederic Chopin]'s polonaises, mazurkas and waltzes for piano. [Mikhail Fokine]'s choreography recreates the soft lines and lilting ballon of the Romantic style as a poet dances with a group of winged forest sprites or "sylphides". British choreographer [Alastair Marriott] who has enjoyed critical and audience acclaim with new work Sensorium created for The Royal Ballet's First Drafts in the Clore and Being and Having Been as part of the Inspired by Diaghilev Programme in the Linbury 2004 makes his third main stage work for the Company. His two previous main stage ballets are Tanglewood (2005) and Children of Adam (2007). The Firebird was commissioned by [Serge Diaghilev] for Ballet Russes in 1910 and has subsequently been reworked by many choreographers, including both [George Balanchine] and [Jerome Robbins]. In 1926 Diaghilev commissioned [Natalia Gontcharova] to redesign The Firebird after deterioration of the original Golovine designs. She produced a dazzling array of vibrant costumes and one of the most glorious and memorable backcloths used in ballet. The narrative, based on various Russian folk tales, follows Prince Ivan as he captures a magical firebird while out hunting and, in exchange for her freedom, he is given one of her feathers. Ivan then encounters a group of young women, led by the beautiful Tsarevna with whom he instantly falls in love only to be captured by the evil Kostchei's slaves and monsters. He summons the Firebird with her feather and she destroys Kostchei, freeing both Prince Ivan and the Tsarevna who marry in the ballet's magnificent final tableau.Producer Royal Ballet. Isadora/Dances at a Gathering - T1750610588

[Deborah MacMillan] has devised a new one act production of [Kenneth MacMillan]'s rarely performed ballet Isadora. The original two act ballet premiered in April 1981 as part of The Royal Ballet's 50th Anniversary Season and the title role was performed by Merle Park and actress, Mary Miller. 20th Century dancer Isadora Duncan was an innovator and free-spirit, a hippy before her time who wanted the whole world to dance in the interests of peace, harmony and love Deborah MacMillan has completely revised the original ballet. In this new production the leading role belongs wholly to a dancer who is accompanied by the recorded voice of an actress, the original score of [Richard Rodney Bennett], and video montage by [Christopher Bird] and [Lynn Wake] which includes archive film from Isadora's heyday. Isadora is paired in a double bill with Jerome Robbins' one act ballet, Dances at a Gathering, last performed as part of the 2007/08 Season alongside The Dream. [Jerome Robbins] originally conceived Dances at a Gathering as a Pas de deux. Developing his theme he widened his musical selection to include etudes, waltzes, mazurkas, a nocturne and a scherzo. The ballet follows a group of friends and lovers exploring their past and present through a series of dances that respond to [Frederic Chopin]'s music, changes in the surrounding landscape and the mood of the ever-changing sky.Producer Royal Ballet. Seven Deadly Sins/Carmen/DGV Danse A Grande Vitesse) - T1398328913

[Will Tuckett]'s 2007 production of the Brecht/Weill Seven Deadly Sins follows the story of Anna, a singer and dancer, as she travels around America trying to scrap money together so that she can build a home for her family. In each of the cities she visits, she encounters one of the seven deadly sins Tuckett is established as one of the foremost choreographers and directors working on stage and screen today. He has enjoyed great critical and audience acclaim for his productions on the Royal Opera House main stage, in the Linbury Studio Theatre, with Opera North, BBC and Channel 4. [Mats Ek] is famous for his vividly theatrical alternatives of the classics and his take on [Georges Bizet]'s celebrated opera Carmen, which he created in 1992 for the Cullberg Ballet, is no exception. A predatory Carmen leads the sexual games, while the pathos of the piece is left for Don Jose. [Mats Ek] uses Bizet's score, transcribed for strings and percussion by [Rodion Shehedrin], with designs by [Marie-Louse Ekman] that take a modern perspective on traditional Spanish motifs. DGV (Danse a grande vitesse), choreographed by [Christopher Wheeldon] is inspired by [Michael Nyman]'s 26-minute long composition: MGV (Musique a grande vitesse), which was written to commemorate the inauguration of the French 'train a grande vitesse'. The 26 dancers and minimalist score work together to transport the audience through varying landscapes capturing the feeling of being suspended in time and space. With set designs by award-winning designer [Jean-Marc Puissant], DGV returns following its critically-acclaimed world premiere at The Royal Opera House in 2006.Producer Royal Ballet. Voluntaries/The Lesson/New McGregor - T1734951777

[Eugene Ionesco]'s chilling drama The Lesson was first choreographed for television by the Danish dancer and choreographer Flemming Flindt in 1963 and entered The Royal Ballet's repertory in 2005. In a dimly lit ballet studio an eager young dance student experiences more than she anticipates at the hands of a murderous ballet teacher, while the rehearsal pianist remains frighteningly detached. Voluntaries, premiered in December 1973 by the Stuttgart Ballet, is [Glen Tetley]'s breathtakingly beautiful tribute to John Cranko who had died suddenly earlier that year. The ballet is set to [Poulenc]'s Concerto in G minor for Organ, Strings and Timpani. Voluntaries - by musical definition - are free ranging improvisations, often played before, during and after religious service. The Latin root of the word can also signify flight or desire, and the ballet is conceived as a series of linked voluntaries. A new work from The Royal Ballet's multi award-winning Resident Choreographer [Wayne McGregor] completes the programme.Producer Royal Ballet. Conductor Daniel Capps. Conductor Barry Wordsworth.
