Stanton Welsh's visually stunning Maninyas draws on the full resources of the dancers' technique in a dazzling sequence of pas de deux and pas de trios for 10 dancers. Originally created for San Francisco Ballet in 1996, Maninyas is set to a beautiful violin concerto by Ross Edward. The Lost Space, by Sumatran-born Boi Sakti, is inspired by traditional Minangkabau martial arts and Indonesian traditions. The movement is fraught with symbolism as the dancers create and recreate their own space onstage. It is sinuous, sensuous and bravura by turns. Completing the triple bill is Birds of Paradise, an abstract work by the late Goh Choo San. Frightened bird-like creatures move around to Alberto Ginastera's Concerto for Harp and Orchestra in a beautiful example of the renowned Singaporean's work.
