Dance Theatre based on the play by [Jean Genet]. The tale: two sisters consumed by jealousy and hatred of their inferior social position plot revenge upon society through their mistress. The intricately planned betrayal falters and thoughts turn to murder. Since its first performance in 1947, Genet’s play The Maids has been a source of controversy and scandal. This fiercely physical interpretation plays heavily on the themes of dominance, humiliation, dependence, enslavement and role-playing. The multi-ethnic dancers create an intense fusion of African ritual, Brazilian carnival and Middle Eastern exoticism.
