Heritage/Tightrope Walker/First Light - T01202958769

In Heritage, Shailesh Bahoran presents an original synthesis of hip-hop and Indian dance, exploring Indian mythology and dance traditions via his own disciplines of popping and breakdance. In Tightrope Walker, Netherlands-based choreographer Kalpana Raghuraman has created a work based on the traditional Indian forms of Kathak, Odissi and Bharatanatyam, prising them loose from their conventions to make connections with modern dance. Sooraj Subramaniam, one of the finest interpreters of Indian dance working in Europe, performs this personal solo exploring ideas about growing up within the restrictions of a culture of shame and breaking loose from the shackles of being watched. An interplay between dance, music, light and space, Seeta Patel's First Light combines the aesthetics of contemporary and Bharatanatyam dance. Patel takes inspiration from age-old stories of good overcoming evil, light overcoming darkness, and the divine female energy of the Hindu goddess Durga in her nine incarnations.Choreographer Shailesh Bahoran (Heritage).
