Uncles and Angels/Dark Cell Double Bill
T0157342393
Afrovibes Festival presents a double bill of contemporary dance from two of South Africa's leading performers.
Uncles and Angels - With breathtaking use of interactive dance and video this piece looks at the South African traditional Reed Dance - a colourful celebration intended to promote respect for young women and preserve the custom of girls remaining virgins until marriage. It's a compelling examination of the manipulation of cultural heritage by those in power.
Dark Cell- Drawing inspiration from former political prisoners of South Africa's Robben Island, Dark Cell is an award-winning dance work that uses the concept of a prison cell as a metaphor for mental imprisonment. "Prison is designed to break one's spirit and destroy one's resolve... all with the idea of stamping out that spark that makes each of us human and each of us who we are." Nelson Mandela, Long Walk to Freedom. Contains minimal male nudity.
