London Premiere. Vincent Mantsoe, a dancer of riveting physicality and 'writhing intensity' (NY Times), is an artist whose work is influenced as much by ancient ritual as it is by modern technique. Mantsoe returns to Dance Umbrella with his new solo, Ebhofolo ('this madness'), in which he takes inspiration from the four spaces of the traditional African homestead to reflect on multiple characters’ journeys through contemporary life. Working with dance historian Karen Vedel and using the music of Persian composer Kayhan Kalhor, Ebhofolo reflects Mantsoe’s commitment to cultural preservation while also negotiating the tensions between tradition and modernity.
