Low Pieces - T0522174076Inquisitive French choreographer Xavier Le Roy eludes the usual categories with his iconoclastic body of work which draws on his background as a scientist. His new piece explores the boundaries of the relationship between audience and performer, using a cast that comprises of some of the most creative practitioners in the current dance scene. Low pieces is a surprising work structured by interruptions and open conversations between the audience and the performers. A series of 'landscapes' (or performance situations) develop as the performers and the audience build diverse kinds of relationships that challenge the rules of theatre. The piece started as an innovative project called 6 Months 1 Location at the Centre Chorégraphique National de Montpellier (France) in 2008. It was initiated by Xavier Le Roy and performance theorist/maker Bojana Cvéjic with 20 other dance makers and students. Since then, it has developed with a changing cast of performers, manifesting itself into a different performance each time. Product of Circumstances (1999) - T01560444296Circumstances: "in 1987 I began to take two dance classes a week at the same time that I started to work on my thesis for my Ph.D. in molecular and cellular biology. It's been now eight years that I have submitted my thesis and stopped to work as a biologist. Since I work as a dancer or choreographer I am very often presented as an atypical dancer or as a dancer molecular biologist. It became my currency in the "Society of the Spectacle". I was invited to prepare and present a lecture for an event on theory and praxis in performance. (Xavier Le Roy, "Body currency" Wiener Festwochen June '98)" Product: "Biography as theory. An autobiographical conference becoming a performance. My body as raw material of social and cultural organization and as the practice of critical necessity."

Le Sacre du Printemps - T01755735747Created in 2007, Le Sacre du Printemps is inspired by a documentary of the Berlin Philharmonic during rehearsal. Fascinated by the functions of the conductor's movements, Le Roy created a piece in which a range of the conductor’s actions are painstakingly recreated on a bare stage, to a recorded soundtrack. The audience, seated in a surround-sound environment, in turn becomes a helpless, instrument-less orchestra.
